This is such a false issue--on so many levels.  First off--like the pending immigration compromise--this bill was sound and fury without significance.  Yes a first baby step--pathetic really.  But most phony is the treatment of the Senate's inaction in the media and at this site.  No way this bill made it through the House--none at all.  Much ado about nothing.

    •  This issue is about the supporters of gun (12+ / 0-)

responsibility finding their political voice and their political footing, and duking it out with the gun lobby.

This was an important first step. This is just a beginning.

      •  bargaining (0+ / 0-)

When bargaining, you ask for the moon--and compromise.  This bill asked for next to nothing, and got just a little less--nothing.  The country is "terror"ized, Obama should issue executive orders under the guise of protecting us from local terrorists.  Military weapons need to be banned--not regulated.  Possession needs to be a criminal offense--these weapons should be treated the way heroin is.

          This bill was the compromise.

that no one needs, like assault weapons, would be part of "responsibility", in my book.
However, we also need to shoot down the idea that "the 2nd amendment is threatened", because it's not.
In my mind, changing the broader attitude about guns in relationship to adulthood and responsibility and seriousness is as important as any of the general regulations proposed.

We have just begun to have a discussion and not allow ourselves to be bullied, threatened or shouted down by the NRA and its pawns. This will take time.
