    Luke just before says that it was the habit of people to sell things and put the proceeds at the apostles' feet.

    Ok, so this guy sells his land. Fine. He doesn't have to give any of the money. He could have given a tenth. However, he gave most, saved some, and said he'd given all the proceeds. He treated the custom as if it were a tax and turned what was supposed to be an offer into some kind of compulsion.

    The church, in fact, did not say "all or nothing." It said, "Whatever you want." This guy, on the other hand, was treating it as if it were an obligation, and that's turning the holy spirit into a tax collector, a gift into a theft.

    Everyone is innocent of some crime.
