I think even senators who wanted to support it did not because they were aware of where their constituency stood. They poll everything, I am certain they polled this. Each senator voted in favor of their own re-election, which is how democracy is intended to work.

I thought that up until a few months ago it was common knowledge that gun control did not enjoy majority support. Heck, I think I heard that like a third or more of democrats are NRA members. I was very surprised that the Democrat leadership chose this issue to blow their political capital on.

And even dumber than choosing this issue is the way they pursued it. Totally disorganized, with some Democrats threatening ridiculous legislation that was nothing but red meat for the guns rights side. Textbook case of political blunder.

    •  oh i think the polling have been quite clear (0+ / 0-)

and it's been consistent between polling operations.  there's been majority support for everything that was proposed (perhaps not as it was written and watered down--but in theory) and overwhelming support for some elements (Read: Background Checks).

i don't know where this meme that there isn't majority support comes from.

people who don't read polls i guess.  or people who don't believe polls.  (Romney campaign workers maybe?)

or maybe it's the people who are emotionally invested in this issue and don't want to believe that everyone doesn't think like they do.

either way...time will tell who's right.  and luckily for you, you have dailykos history to refer back to when that day comes.

      cheers.

Makes me a romney campaign worker? You can disagree with my theory, but jeez, you sound like a paranoid freak with the romney taunt. Get over yourself.

        •  sorry you identified so strongly with the comment (0+ / 0-)

i was just projecting sarcasm about the kind of people who don't believe polls.

not directed specifically towards you or meant to be an accusation.

dressed up as an apology. I'm glad we have such open minded and, frankly, amazingly clever people like you in our forum of ideas. You're like a walking example of intelligent debate.
