    of authoritarianism, obvious in the French and Indian War, suppressed by Washington, but reemerges with the Mexican War. Could ask the question in 1920 with the return to normalcy rejecting progressivism, embracing segregation, River Rouge and military industrial complex. The New Deal was a civil war with the economic royalists and there was a hapless coup attempt against FDR. It took a civil rights war to restart Reconstruction. Post-WWII raises the question of paying for the military grid, but internal suppression is offset by the need to squeeze tax dollars to pay for global dominance. A crashed economy threatens the DOD as it did the soviet planners.
