  •  In the Republican/Libertarian/Ayn Rand utopia... (7+ / 0-)

There would be no need for Federal aid. There would also be no need for OSHA Regulations. In fantasy land, the way this is supposed to work is that the fertilizer company carries insurance and the insurance company drops by to see what level of incompetence it can live with. When things blow up, the public sues the fertilizer company and the insurer pays for the damage. What could possibly go wrong with that model of perfection?

    •  This was not a natural disaster, but a man made (6+ / 0-)

disaster created by a corporation.  In the world of Republican private sector primacy, plants like this would be responsible for the harm they create and each individual citizen would be empowered to sue them for damages.  That is why places like this fertilizer plant carry insurance.

This could serve as a model of how those who advocate a private sector solution for every problem actually deal with those problems in the field.  As of right now, they seem to be running to the Federal government to bail them out.

Call me a little bitter, but those staunch Republican private sector purists slow walked the aid to the Northeast during the Hurricane Sandy disaster and didn't give a shit about those who had suffered.  When something affects them, however, something made worse by the lack of safety precautions and the refusal to enact adequate zoning regulations, since that would be Communism, they want the US taxpayers to bail out their greed and lack of planning.
