    go to the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History and check out the Gem Room (don't remember what it's really called, but that's how I think of it). It's where the Hope Diamond is, but what's really interesting, they have displays of all kinds of precious and semiprecious stones, many with the same name but in different colors.

    It's all about the minerals that provide the dye. For example, I forget exactly, but sapphires are called something else with a different mineral coloring them. Or maybe it's emeralds, or rubies -- one of the three anyway. Same stone, different color, different name. All b/c of a trace amount of another mineral.

    IIRC, of course.
