MIT has traditionally been a very open and welcoming place. I am at MIT at least one evening a week (I help run the bell ringing class).  I have been hanging out there since I was in high school, in the early 70's.   I worked in offices that are literally across the street from the intersection mentioned, for about 15 years.  (3 different companies).

Cambridge does have its tougher sections, and some of them aren't that far from campus.  But other than some petty theft, it hasn't been a big deal.

My condolences to the officers family.

Looks like we will be doing two memorial pieces on Monday.  (we had already planned to use Sunday at Old North church and Monday at handbell practice, as occasions for quarter peals, recognizing the marathon losses)  We won't have the Old North bells long enough to ring separate performances on Sunday (its 45 minutes of non-stop ringing on bells that even with the hatches shut are quite loud in the apartments that surround the church), but that isn't an issue for handbells.

This planet needs a lot more kids who think taking a lawnmower apart is more fun than playing a videogame.
