We remind them that immigrants have been the lifeblood of American culture, that their greatest accomplishments in science, the arts, and so many other spheres of inquiry have all been immensely indebted to the country's openness to immigration.

We remind Republicans that immigrants did not slay schoolchildren in a small town in Connecticut. We remind them that Timothy McVeigh didn't need to come from abroad to level a federal building and its occupants in one of the worst terrorist attacks prior to 9/11. We remind them that the likes of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev have more in common with their own right-wing extremists than they do with the hundreds of millions of first, second, and third-generation immigrants who are fast coming to define the texture of this country -- and who will permanently alter the electoral makeup of this country.

Democratic politicians have to learn to stop cowering in fear at the thought of what Republicans might do.

Nothing requires a greater effort of thought than arguments to justify the rule of non-thought. -- Milan Kundera
