Haven't been back in years, but there was a refinery in the north-central part of the city.  Drove by it every day on my way to the college.

of Research. It was newly built about a decade ago, moved from D.C. itself.
But there was research going on here for years and years before this building went up. And they've recently discovered all sorts of toxic stuff in the creek water and the soil around our creek. Apparently lots of stuff was dumped, possibly post WWII and for a couple of decades after that.
Our neighborhood was here first. But the Army didn't have to do anything to protect us.

While Democrats work to get more people to vote, Republicans work to ensure those votes won't count.

        •  Remember Love Canal? (3+ / 0-)

From a NYT article in 1975:

Twenty five years after the Hooker Chemical Company stopped using the Love Canal here as an industrial dump, 82 different compounds, 11 of them suspected carcinogens, have been percolating upward through the soil, their drum containers rotting and leaching their contents into the backyards and basements of 100 homes and a public school built on the banks of the canal.
But that's not the scary part:
We suspect that there are hundreds of such chemical dumpsites across this Nation.
