    1. It's not academic.  This is a common issue.  For example, it's very common for the parent of an immigrant to get a green card and then return to live in the home country.  It's often devastating to their families if their green card is suddenly revoked.

    2. No, the U.S. government never said that on an official website.  I can believe that some idiot at an immigration office gave you bad information.  But you're aware, are you not, that such statements are not legally binding and have no force at all?

    3. Because it was tantamount to advice.  In any event, it was plain misinformation that actually could harm people.
