What we really need is regulation of backpacks and pressure cookers.  That could have prevented this whole tragedy.

      Congratulations!

Calling other DKos members "weenies" is a personal insult and therefore against site rules.

But, I'm not the only person to say it.   Have you heard the expression, "Winning the Hearts and Minds"?   Major Military Strategists recognize that the correct strategy for controlling violence is to engage the people who are committing the violence, and convince them not to want to do it.   This is the same thing that was said in a paper signed by many psychologists and experts on violence, which talked about social isolation, and the community being engaged.   Trying to hide all the materials that they could use to commit violence is a fool's errand, as we've seen lately with the stabbings and bombings, etc.

The profile of these types of people is that they tend to take time, plan, and prepare, collecting materials prior to their acts.     Either they'll overcome obstacles to getting what they want, or substitute another weapon.

This whole discussion was started by high profile mass murders, and I feel the answer is more complex than it's being made out to be.
