We have to remember that identity based on ethnicity its purely a XIX century invention. Before that cultural aspects had a role nearly as important as physiognomy or genes.

Many of the peoples from the Caucasus are not Christians and the only ones there fully "white" from before were the Christian Armenians or the also Christian Georgians.

Also in that area religion as part of identity is very interesting from those Mongols who converted to Islam vs the Mongols that converted to Christianity, all the way to the Golden Horde. Same in Northern India, the Mogul Empire and the questions of ethnic racial identity in a very stratified society.

As is race. And genes have no role in race. There are cultural norms that delineate various physiognomic feature as belonging to people of a certain race. Generally speaking nationalism was a product of the 18th and 19th century, and earlier, in part from colonialism. But ethnicities are far older and people have identified with their ethnicities for a long time, although not exclusively and not always. Sometimes religion was the vital feature, sometimes class or caste.

The similarity between all these has been that they are defined socially and not physiologically. With race this was a deliberate matter of being constructed, which is why so many people mistake it as being about physiology.

Tribes, even the most remote hunter gatherers you can find, have defined themselves against the others. If you translate the name of many native groups it just means The people or The humans. The ways to mark that difference even with people that look like you were particular hair styles, particular clothing, scars, tattoos and so on.

In the 19th century, also with the development of Social Darwinism, there was a clear intent to put the cultural social ethnic believes in categories. The physical traits became the most important thing.

into "the people" thing. Our history of othering goes back a long, long way and it's going to be hard to break.
