Or are you saying that this is just CYA against the right? Because as we all know they always give him the benefit of the doubt there.

Seriously, he's weakening civil rights to cater to the right for no discernably good reason. Seems weak and foolish to me. Par for the course.

    •  If you google (0+ / 0-)

the examples you will find refer to immediate questions ...

      "Are there any more bombs"

      That kind of thing.

One SCOTUS ruling held that 58 minutes was okay, there have been other rulings in Federal Courts about timing.

In this case, it is still likely that the guy will be read his rights as soon as he is fit to understand them.

What was said tonight was simply a holding position, that did no more than acknowledge that the exception exists.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

      •  Not my point (0+ / 0-)

I meant how does this get the suspect to talk?

          It doesn't.

This kid is likely to talk anyway, rights read or not.

If he is not prepared to talk, then he will already know his rights.

This is not about whether he will talk or not. It's about that value of anything he says in future proceedings. However, there does seem to be an entire mountain of hard evidence already, so it's probably moot.

        •  Isn't he in the hospital? (0+ / 0-)

So they don't necessarily have full-time access to him. Asking him if there are more bombs could be a better use of the limited time before the doctor has to get back to him than reading him his rights.
