is the classic example I always go to when understanding the difference between right and left.

    •  Any culture has to strike a balance (5+ / 0-)

between dispassion and compassion; some cruelties are necessary for survival. Some are just impulses to lash out at the weak and offensive and different.

Golding's tale, of course, is about a contrived brand-new tribe sorting these things out from scratch...and doing so rather poorly.

I suspect most of the primitive societies in human prehistory failed to strike a working balance, only the ones lucky enough to outlive their own initial errors did so. And even most of these died off through mischance and conflict with other bands.

But some did. Some transcended the 'Jack and the Warriors' phase. Some didn't burn the whole island. Some survived, even thrived.

We call these civilizations. Built on hard-won, barely-survived, tragic bank shots of fortunes that should never ever have to be re-experienced....and probably can't be survived twice by the same cultural thread.

So I vote we keep civilization. :)
