too much of their time. A lot of conservatives will vote for a sinner who thinks like them rather than a heathen democrat who supports choice and is anti-bigotry.

they have codified this thinking in their religious outlook. How the party that identifies with the top percent, routinely supportes hatefullness to one's fellow brothers and sisters and cares nothing for the down and out can sucker people into thinking they are the Christian party remains one of the great mysteries of modern life but it is hard to break.

from the start. The worthy memes of loving each other and helping the poor and needy (already present in Judaism) had to compete with all of the varieties of magical thinking that people of the time had come up with, starting with prophecies of the Messiah. Christians then escalated to God magically sacrificing himself to himself to buy off his own anger at sinners so that they can escape just punishment in Hell. Later some of them compounded this with rejoicing that others will suffer the most vicious tortures for eternity.

In the US, this all got stirred together with virulent racism, in which White slaveowners and their Jim Crow and later descendants could not admit to being of Black African ancestry just like everybody else (although they always use the "descent from monkeys" Dog Whistle). Thus Curse of Ham theology as the origin of Black Africans, which means that the book of Genesis has to be history to them, not myth and legend and allegory. Accordingly, to the worst of them Darwinism has to be a lie from the pit of Hell, along with cosmology and Global Warming and so on.

If that didn't make enough sense to explain the matter to you, take comfort. It isn't you who has the problem.

Of course, there are Christians who are not infected with these vicious hatreds, who try to winnow out the nonsense and stick to doing the right thing. As Gandhi is supposed to have said when asked about Christianity,

I think it is excellent. They should try it.
