  •  Good question. (14+ / 0-)

It seems to be an article of faith among the gundamentalist crowd that the government is going to create a registry of firearms, and then suddenly Big Brother is going to swoop in and confiscate them all.  Meteor Blades has pointed out (thus far in vain) that we've had a registry of machine guns for over 70 years and there have been no confiscations.

The interesting thing about the whole confiscation theory is that it collides with another RKBA article of faith -- that strong gun regulation is political poison.  So to believe the confiscation theory, you have to believe that the government (presumably the Democrats in government) are going to commit political suicide by creating a registry of firearms, and then double down on that political suicide by using the registry to confiscate people's firearms.

But obviously, only one of these notions can be true.  Either the government won't be able to create a registry and confiscate weapons because doing so will be disastrously politically unpopular, or the government will be able to do it, but only because gun regulation is not nearly so politically unpopular as the RKBA crowd claims.

    •  I got that from another commenter here who (0+ / 0-)

was being chased to the right margin because he had the audacity to propose a gun safety measure. The RkBAers were out in force to enforce absolutely no gun discussions will take place on Dkos. They harass and chase everyone to the right margin and turn many great ideas into boring, violent wars slamming into the right margin.

guns are fun v. hey buddy, watch what you are doing -- which side are you on?
