  •  The left tried radio but didn't have the money (0+ / 0-)

Air America went tits up in 2010.

There are 5 Pacifica Radio stations, Chicago has WCPT, Portland OR's station switched to sports, SiriusXM has one channel, and there are a number of internet radio stations.

    And that's it.

We don't have enough socialist billionaires.

    •  there are a number of ways to fix the radio. it (0+ / 0-)

won't be fixed through money and competition. the right has shown they will try to maintain their monopoly and reduce competition- their brains know it is their most important tool. the assumption that 'market' forces have determined 95% of talk radio listeners are idiots who like being lied to is a bad one and one that the RW sells.

the left has to challenge those radio stations and the monopoly and it won't happen with money or by ignoring it.

protests at stations, boycotts like stoprush.net, a searchable database of what the main local and national talkers are repeating so thet radio can be factored in, and getting university sports out of RW radio would finally challenge RW radio and force stations to switch formats or offer balance.

there are probably many other ways but the only one being tried is the boycott.

      •  So you're saying we just try to kill RW radio? (0+ / 0-)

        •  RW radio and democracy cannot coexist as long as (0+ / 0-)

they have their monopoly- it is too effective in short circuiting the feedback mechanisms a democracy needs. it makes rational national discussions of major issues impossible. it is used to threaten politicians and media and minority groups. it is a propaganda tool for the 1%.

we stop ignoring it. stop giving it a free speech free ride. if it had competition it would be nothing like it is now - they couldn't compete except in the south mostly. limbaugh might have 50 stations instead of 600. the monopoly would shrink to a quarter of what it is now and we could get some progress.

the monopoly has to be destroyed or forget democracy. maybe eventually we'll have free ubiquitous internet but global warming makes ignoring it until then the biggest political mistake in history.

the 1% 's think tanks have coordinated scripted carnival barkers repeating the same propaganda all day from every corner and stump in the country and the left allows it. the left walks by with their ipods in their ears.

much of the political discussion on this blog and others and in the MSM on major issues is done in a talk radio free universe and RW radio kicks our ass because of it.

any activism on any major issue you might do is minimized by it.

RW radio monopolies did not kill left-wing radio. Having insufficient ears and insufficient ad sales killed it (and the occasional embezzlement problem). Leftists these days, especially younger ones, are on the internet, not listening to AM radio.

But still there might be some propaganda value in going toe-to-toe, station-to-station with RW radio. Unfortunately, we don't have Murdochs to keep us running in thin times, we don't have a Rev. Moon who pumped I forget how many billion$$$ into his perennial loser, the Washington Times. It's only afloat because of subsidy.

            •  they have a monopoly, can't beat that w/business (0+ / 0-)

it's not about money. it's about blue communities telling their universities they can't endorse global warming-denying hate mongering war-selling KKK radio anymore. that a fucking disgrace and absolutely idiotic.

it's about the left realizing how inefficient their efforts are just because they give RW radio a free speech free ride.

it's about realizing the GOP's power centers are those megastations. you can't beat that on their terms. they have a monopoly. they need recognition, monitoring, blaming, and shaming. protests have been useless for years because some young republican with a big microphone is worth thousands of protestors. it's fucking stupid.

              •  I guess I'm not understanding your plan. (0+ / 0-)

Are you saying it's hopeless and we've lost because we "give RW radio a free speech free ride"? What does that even mean? What free ride? Could the left selectively revoke the right's 1stA rights?

And you think I don't realize "the GOP's power centers are those megastations"? I've been saying to you that they have us outmatched because we don't have the money that they can pour into RW radio. I should think you would take that as a sign that I realize "the GOP's power centers are those megastations."

                Ah well. Good night.

                •  i'm saying all the left has to do is stop ignoring (0+ / 0-)

                  it.

that's the free ride they get. their call screeners and the monopoly means there is no one talking back in real time- they create their own reality because of it.

the left always reacts after the lies have been pounded into teh earholes of 50 mil a week.

the 'debt crisis', sequestration, benghazy, newtown, gun control, now boston, have been/will be spun by the right the way they want because they have that radio megaphone.

and they get away with it because the left has no response.

it's like allowing a jerk to stand on the corner and call you a liar and thief and traitor all day and ignoring it. if it happens all day every day, pretty soon your neighbors might believe him. that's been  happening all over the country for 25 years. and that's a corporate soapbox they're standing on. the notion these guys are individuals speaking their minds is absurd.

the least the left/dems can do is monitor the main talkers with automated transcription so they know what they're up to and when they're lying about their candidates and can take it to the media and at least react before the lies become truth.

the left can recognize the talk radio gods and those stations for the parts they've played in all these disasters and name them and credit them so they're not invisible to the MSM. they need to get credit for the bullshit and need shaming.

protestors need to include RW stations.

the boycott needs to go to ALL RW radio.

no university that broadcasts sports on RW radio should be without a student/community movement to end it and force the uni to look for alternatives. without uni sports RW radio would be a shell of its existing self and many of those stations would be offering to balance their programming to keep that association and all the ad dollars it brings in.

that's just a few things. at the moment the left lets the carnival barkers on the corners call their sisters and brothers thieves and whores and traitors and threaten and lie about their reps with little or no response.

that's giving them a free speech free ride. it's stupid for the left's orgs and the dem party to go on like this, getting their ass kicked because thinking people get a headache listening to RW radio and think their only fix is to compete in a monopoly situation.

only way. i'm agreeing that won't work, but there are many other things the left and dem party can do to reduce their advantage/monopoly power and even the field.
