  •  just was talking to some advocates for the Elkhorn (8+ / 0-)

Slough and the Salinas Valley watershed...they said the water in that aquifer, once claimed to be bottomless, is now so low that there are areas where they are getting intrusions from geothermal water sources that are increasing the minerals associated with that, sulfur for one..

They said the claimed bottomless water reservoir/aquifer has seen 300' drops in water wells.

They also have warned about the Peripheral Tunnel scheme as related to especially the Monterrey shale fracking damage.

And with the water levels at 50% of rainfall and snowpack, there is just going to be  no water for this project anytime soon. There may not be enough water for current legal commitments: wine growing, water for cities and towns, and agriculture, legal agriculture... much less the significant illegal water diversions that are funding the northern cal economy and many governments as well..MJ growing.

Just think of the irony, big ag and socal home developers and fracking interests backing MJ legalization efforts so as to be able to reclaim the diverted water when the growers all become legit and buy vineyards and current ag lands here and elsewhere. Too much common sense, never happen.

So appropriate to see Dan Bacher's reporting finally hit here at dkos, he has labored at this issue for quite a while now, much appreciation, especially on Earth Day weekend..I just got back from volunteering at ours doing my little bit.

    This machine kills Fascists.

    •  Dan's reports need to get a lot more (5+ / 0-)

attention than they have been getting. He puts a lot of work into each and every one and these need to be on the rec. list.

The only trouble with retirement is...I never get a day off!

    •  This! was one of the things that the water (6+ / 0-)

contractors were pushing HARD! in the Delta Vision Blue Ribbon meetings...

much less the significant illegal water diversions that are funding the northern cal economy
They sic'd the SWRCB on this - it turned out to be bullshit. The real issue is that paper water in CA is 8x the amount of REAL water in CA. And that bullshit is now coming due and payable.

if a habitat is flooded, the improvement for target fishes increases by an infinite percentage...because a habitat suitability index that is even a tiny fraction of 1 is still infinitely higher than zero, which is the suitability of dry land to fishes.
