  •  Being subjected to racial stereotyping is awful (17+ / 0-)

As a white person, I too have experienced it only occasionally, and never in such a scary way as what you went through, but at least one incident has stuck in my mind for more than ten years, even though I was never in danger. It hurts to be treated as a "type" rather than a person. I hope that we are moving towards a society in which no one will have to experience that kind of thing very often, even though human nature and mental illnesses being what they are, no doubt there will always be "incidents" between people of different backgrounds. But as you say, it's intolerable that some people are still subjected to this kind of thing on a regular basis.

    •  I guess a lot of folks here don't live in (4+ / 0-)

a big city. This kind of incident can be observed about every day around here, and happens between every conceivable combination of ethnicity, religion, condition, age, weight, and all the other distinguishing marks you can think of. The amazing thing is how rarely it escalates into violence except when true believers of one kind or another get involved.

      •  Yeah, for sure, (9+ / 0-)

As someone who was reliant on the public bus system while living in LA, yeah. You have to have a thick skin about crazies.

I was once riding the bus and a guy riding next to me struck up a conversation. He was a really nice guy who happened to be a Physician's Assistant... a job for which I was studying. He was talking about the best way to get a job as a PA when another guy stepped onto the bus and shouted out loud: "I HATE N****S!!"

Every white person on the bus froze with an anguished look on his and her face. Oh no, did he just say.... oh no, oh no, oh no...

The guy I was talking to (who happened to be black) paused for, maybe, a quarter-second. He then laughed and yelled back at the crazy: "Yeah, me too!"

He then turned back to me. "Anyway, the best PA jobs are at the VA Hospital because any job at the VA is a government job and has full benefits-"

I still wasn't listening to him. I was still a bit rattled by the crazy. The guy noticed this and laughed again. "Man, that guy really threw you for a loop, didn't he? Sorry about that." (like it was HIS fault) "You just gotta feel sorry for guys like that. They're mentally ill. They say stuff like that because they really hate themselves and don't know how to deal with it."

        He was right, of course.

      •  I'm originally from Northern California (0+ / 0-)

I'm sure we have racial incidents but nothing racially-connected ever happened to me there. Every time I've been threatened or scared by a man, he was white.
