The series started as radio show.  I think I have a copy of the transcripts somewhere.  There was also a television version done many years ago, which was really good.  Very funny.  The guy who does Arthur is very good, ford is very dead pan.  The Hollywood movie, as far I am concerned, put a full stop on the series, like an armadillo in the middle of the road.

Also a sad ending is that the Alabama theater is now a Trader's Joes, where all the upper middle class can get their Walmart prices.   I suppose if yo have some ethical problem with whole foods, they are ok.

Douglas Adams's death was a bit of a roadblock too.  As I've said in comments to my previous diaries, I quite liked some parts of the movie.  Other parts, not so much.

The movie did have a happy ending of sorts, which I find inconsistent with Adams' world view;  (He admits that in an Infinite Universe, anything is possible, but he doesn't really believe in them); but which probably made for a better movie.  The movie left open the possibility of further adventures, but was self-contained enough that it didn't really need a continuation, the way that the book Mostly Harmless needed a posthumous sequel to cleanse the reader's palate from its depressing ending.

Someday, someone very well might do a re-make of Hitchhiker, the way that all classics eventually get re-made; but it won't be a continuation of a movie franchise.
