  •  Yup. (7+ / 0-)

    Usually it's
    1. A set for the IRS -- "we're losing money. We shouldn't pay any tax!"
    2. A set for the bankers -- "we're a well-run, credit-worthy  profitable venture. Please give a loan!"

    3. The real ones -- to keep the other partners honest while they're lying to everyone else.

When I'd show up and ask to see their books, the flash of panic in their eyes is amusing. I just pat them on the shoulders and assure them I don't know any IRS agents or bankers and keep it that way for a reason.

Your grandfather sounds like a man who knew and was trusted by his customers. And he made sure your grandmother never worried about money. Says a lot about him.

So if you get hit by a bus tonight, would you be satisfied with how you spent today, your last day on earth? Live like tomorrow is never guaranteed, because it's not. -- Me.
