And there will be NO calls for reducing access to the automatic weapons that the two "law abiding" brothers easily bought and used to shoot hundreds of rounds per minute, turning formerly quiet neighborhoods into war zones.
Please link to the site reporting what kind of guns they had... I've seen no report suggesting that the Tsarnaevs had automatic weapons shooting hundreds of rounds per minute. As near as I can tell, the parties carrying those guns were the police, and the worst shootout was estimated to have involved about 200 rounds total, most of which were fired by the police. The only story I've found addressing their guns indicated that one was recovered with Tamerlan's body, and two others were in the boat, and didn't identify or describe the guns.

of the firefight to understand that nobody -- not the suspects, or the police -- was firing an automatic weapon.

had a 9 mm handgun. I suspect that the three guns will turn out to be two semiauto handguns and one long gun. Given that Massachusetts has an AWB in place, except for rifles grandfathered 19 years ago, it would have been expensive for them to get an AR15 or AK-type rifle. Maybe an SKS, maybe a shotgun, maybe a deer rifle. We'll see.

      And next year.

      Yup.

    •  That's the point, isn't it? (4+ / 0-)

When they were on the rampage during their escape they did not have assault rifles. If they had, then the carnage would have been greater. The Massachusetts AWB made that difficult. Any doubt they would have liked to have them? AWBs work.

      •  Rampage??? (0+ / 0-)

They were not attempting to kill mass numbers. They were atttempting to flee and fighting for their lives. They chucked bombs at the police out of desperation, not by plan. If the goal had been to kill the most possible police, they'd have stayed to fight and boobytrapped themselves with bombs set to go off after they were down. And we still don't actually know what weapons they had. The "carnage" was one officer they took out by surprise. He'd almost certainly have been just as dead if they'd used an AK 47 or a knife as the 9 mm handgun that was actually used. The other shots they took were in desperation as they were trying to run. There is no particular reason to believe that any more officers would have been killed if they'd been using any other sort of weapon, aside from a rocket launcher.

      •  And I was wrong on that; the wounded MTBA officer (0+ / 0-)

was injured during that firefight, too. The next post down, though, suggests that they actually were using an "assault rifle" during the firefight: an AR-15-type rifle. It's unclear where they got these weapons; apparently none of the appropriate local jurisdictions are admitting to having issued a permit to Tamerlan. Dzhokhar is too young to have such a permit, although he could purchase ammunition for the rifle, or the bulk reloading powder or shotgun shells they used to get the powder. Obviously, they could have purchased them on the black market in Massachusetts, or possibly found a private seller in New Hampshire.

Described the gun being fired at by one of the brothers as a "long gun" - repeatedly, over the scanner. Later, the searchers were searching for long guns during the sweep. Those long guns were found in the late afternoon/early evening on Friday. The subsequent shoot-out at the boat involved a long gun.

They did not specify what style of long gun was being used in any of the radio communications.

included a 9 mm semiauto pistol, a .40 caliber semiauto pistol, and an M4 carbine, which is another term for an AR-15-type rifle with a shorter barrel and a telescoping-type folding stock.
