    immense WW2 contracts, with 'successful' aircraft being built by the others. e.g. Hawker Hurricanes built in quantity by Glosters, almost every Fairey Swordfish built by Blackburns, etc.

    The whole sector was undergoing 'natural' consolidation, immediately post-WW2, e.g. General Aircraft merged with Blackburn..... its just that the Conservative Government of the late 1950s/early 60s really didn't know what they were doing, and had some 'anti-aircraft' people (pardon the pun) at the very top.

      to just let nature take its course rather than forcing the mergers?

      If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!
