And a big fat thank you for writing about this in such human terms!  I feel like I'm "late" to appreciating the special struggles of the transgendered, even though I spent most of my childhood feverishly wishing I could be a boy.  In my case, I think it was desire to shed the 2nd class citizenship status of the female gender.  I would take the label "male" in a heartbeat, but I'm comfortable in my skin, and 60 is a little late for switching body parts.
At any rate, I feel I now know that gender is a personal ID we all make in our own way, and the spectrum is endless.  I have fought and advocated for the rights of the "LGB" community, and now I want to make up for lost time, and enthusiastically fold the "T" community into my advocacy.  I probably would still be largely unaware of my T brothers & sisters pain and struggles, if you hadn't presented it in such human and personal terms.
