  •  In truth, it was ever thus. (3+ / 0-)

The hate-mongers are just base and loud, as usual. The corporate media is ever so happy to comply, as usual. The bigots are reveling in their rage, as usual.

The corporate media are likely coming around because they need the ratings share of the new wave of immigrants. When I worked for a small Gannett paper back in the mid-'90s, the company was aggressive about including news and pictures of non-Caucasians for just that reason. Anyone who looked at demographics then knew it. (Clearly, the GOP was too stupid to look that far ahead, and are now backpedaling as fast as they can even if they sacrifice a few bigots along the way.)

Back in the early '70s I taught junior high remedial reading for migrant workers in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of south Texas. Their ambition was to get a job working inside, maybe at a store. Those young people may have been behind in reading -- after six months of stoop labor in the fields -- but many of them were smart as all get out. Over time, over generations, they "assimilated" in varying degrees.

While I suppose that's a good thing, it's a damn shame if they have to sacrifice their friendly, laughing, dancing, family-loving culture. So I hope pockets of that continue to thrive as others get inside jobs, open businesses, or try the corporate ladder.

Many will "succeed" in the sense of our U.S. culture. Some already have. Seeing the difference between first and third generations makes me hope at least some will hold on to their culture.

I'm glad, I guess, the corporate media is finally seeing the light. Thanks for the fine diary, Ian.
