I worked for a man who liked to brag how he had started at the bottom. Of course, I was supposed to overlook the possibility that his father's ownership of the company had anything to do with his meteoric rise.

    A fine diary.

I would like a new world.
I love that new world odor.

Swift has this line where he says something like, 'The power of luck is confessed only by the poor, for the wealthy attribute all of their successes to their own excellences.' In other words, the rich look out from their moated heads and think about how they "got there." The answer to that is, obviously, hard work and smarts.

My brother really did build his business in a literal way with his own back-breaking labor, but that's not the same thing as building it alone.

Remember how the Soviet Union and the GDR used to deal with dissidents who wanted to leave? They said, "Sure. Just pay us back for your education and housing, and then we'll be even, and you can go." They also, of course, thought that their system was the very definition of good and fair, and thus anyone who preferred another system must be insane a priori.

Everyone is innocent of some crime.
