  •  I said the same thing with the Aurora shooter (0+ / 0-)

I know I'm in a tiny minority in this, and I know I'm probably wrong to think it, but there are certain crimes I don't think we should waste our time trying. An example should be set that if you fuck with us in this magnitude we will fuck right back. My other idea was to blow his legs off and kick him out of the country, but I think that has less popularity.

    •  The second we say this... (19+ / 0-)

...we can just kiss goodbye any remaining notions of our criminal justice system meting out anything remotely resembling justice.

there are certain crimes I don't think we should waste our time trying.
Because today it's going to be folks who are undoubtedly guilty  like James Holmes or Dzhokar Tsarnaev, and tomorrow it's going to be folks who are "undoubtedly guilty" like Richard Jewell or that Saudi kid that Glenn Beck still thinks did it.

If there's so much evidence against the accused that it seems like a "waste of time" trying them, then the good news is that the trial is likely only delaying the inevitable—the criminal receiving the punishment demanded by justice.

    •  FWIW, that was my first instinct too: (6+ / 0-)

When I thought of all those marathoners who got their legs blown off, my first wish for the perp was that they'd START on him by pulling his legs off.

But that's why it's an instinct and not a legality. The "hit back when you're hit" reflex that protects you when you're hurt is absolutely not the way to run a country - as we noticed during the BushII years, when we hit back at the WRONG people.

When an anti-death penalty Congressman was asked how he'd hypothetically respond if his daughter were to be raped and murdered by some guy (it's always rape with these people, isn't it - and making the women suffer?), he responded promptly, "I'd want to tear the guy apart with my bare hands. Which is exactly why we should let the legal system handle these cases, and not angry, vengeful relatives."

Roper: So now you'd give the Devil benefit of law!

More: Yes. What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

Roper: I'd cut down every law in England to do that!

More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country's planted thick with laws from coast to coast– man's laws, not God's– and if you cut them down—and you're just the man to do it—do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake.

Just substitute Lindsay Graham for Roper.

I'm hard pressed to see a trial as a "waste of time".

      •  Normally, I would agree, but in this specific (0+ / 0-)

case, with the Boston Bomber, I do have to say trying him is a waste of time. I know legally I am completely in the wrong about this, but morally, I have to say he's better to us dead.

Salafi extremist.  If you're serious, which you seem to be, you don't have the moral character to be licensed to be a lawyer in the United States.

And you're a damned fool for posting this kind of stuff on the Internet.  If you ever apply for admission to the bar of an American state, trust that the Character and Fitness Committee may know about crap like this.
