    Not overrated.
    Not romance novels.
Read the books, they're hilarious and satirical. You've missed the point or been misled by the movies.

For once Mark Twain was really wrong...but then again he was making a joke too..

    •  Mark Twain didn't like pianos either (6+ / 0-)

I hugely admire Mark Twain, and usually quote him at least weekly, but I don't agree with everything he says.  For example, he really disliked the piano (though he did admire the great Gottschalk) and far preferred the banjo.  I am amused by Mark Twain's opinion of Wagner: "I'm told Wagner's music is better than it sounds".

I like Jane Austen, though I haven't read the complete oeuvre.  Emma is a great book, but extremely hard to make into a movie since so much of it is inside Emma's mind.  The only treatment I thought captured it well was Clueless.  OTOH, IMO Persuasion is rather dreary to read, but the 1995 movie starring Amanda Root is superb.  Corin Redgrave plays Sir Elliot as a dispeptic, upper-class snob of exactly the same sort satirized by Graham Chapman in Monty Python's "Flying Lesson": "No more buttered scones for me, Mater, I'm off to play... the grahnd piahno... pardon me while I fly my aeroplane".

Better to hide your tax returns and be thought a crook than to release them and remove all doubt. [Adapted from Abraham Lincoln]
