    for me is that in her works many of the most ridiculous characters portrayed (and almost all are ridiculous in one way or another) are those who set themselves in judgment over others or tout their superiority in matters of taste. I have inclinations of my own toward egocentric arrogance and have found her work--which I read and re-read purely for pleasure--is also a bracing tonic when my misanthropy is at its height. She doesn't "restore my faith in humanity" or anything similar, but she does remind me I'm a part of humanity. A pity Mr. Bennett had no such medicine in his library.
