  •  Well, this just can't be! (4+ / 0-)

I've been told over and over again that thanks to Republican gerrymandering of districts, there's just no way Democrats can win a majority of seats in the House. Not even if the Republicans totally alienate the electorate, continue catering to the whims of their loony base, and put up candidates who'd have trouble winning a popularity vote in their own household.

Don't tell me the deathless commentators on the internets might not know what the hell they're talking about! My faith in humanity has already been shaken to its core because Reese Witherspoon got arrested.

nominee for every district is Mark Sanford, and then we'll cruise back into the majority.

I enumerated a couple of others, namely the alienation of the public from the Republican brand and the relentless catering by the Republicans to the worst nincompoops in their base.

Yeah, not every candidate can be Mark Sanford (or Todd Akin), but I'm a bit more optimistic for the Democrats' chances in 2014 than a lot of learned folks are saying, and I'm uninterested in pre-excuses (gerrymandering districts, etc.) that seem to justify not even trying.

folks", after all, they're learned.  When they say gerrymandering hurts our chances, they do so because it does.  Obama won the presidential election, but because of the way congressional districts are drawn, the median district in the House is one Obama lost.  That puts us at a serious disadvantage.  We're still 17 seats from the majority, and the Republicans only hold 2 or 3 that are really Democratic leaning.
