  •  If you take the jewelry to (5+ / 0-)

    a good pawn shop or a good jewelry store, they will often at least tell you if it's real or fake even if they won't give you a full appraisal.

    And sometimes, if they are historically old, a paste diamond can be worth more than a real one of comparable size.

      point; thx much, I wouldn't have thought of pawn shop. umm, how do you figure out what's the "best" pawn shop in town? I know there are one or two; what, ask the local LEOs?

      "real" work : a job where you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom...

        Or if you know someone who pawns stuff, you could ask them, or an auctioneer.  Sometimes they auction off unclaimed pawns that aren't selling.
