People invariably do cruel and terrible things to them.  And I can't bear it.

The only exception I've ever made is Rita Mae Brown's cozy mysteries because I know animals will not be abused and they're invariably humorous and intelligent, even sentient, beings in her stories, which I occasionally seek out for their whimsy.

I really hate to see animals get hurt, too.
