  •  Richie Havens was a legend indeed. RIP (8+ / 0-)

The first time I had ever heard of him was a Life Magazine cover story on music stars and their parents.

The Jackson Five was on the cover with their parents Joe and Katherine. Havens was featured with his parents, along with Grace Slick, Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa and their folks.

He was quite unique for me because he was a folk singer and as an African American little girl, I didn't know that AAs were folk singers. I have grown up since then and I became more familiar with other AA folk singers such as him and Odetta.

Havens was not the only singer who passed away today. Christina Amphlett, lead singer of the Australian group the Divinyls died today as well. She had breast cancer and MS.

Here's her group's biggest hit in the US:

"Do they call you Rush because you're in a rush to eat?" -"Stutterin' John" Melendez to Rush Limbaugh.
