The Lunar calendar has 354 days.  A leap month is added every three years to account for this difference with the solar calendar.

Interestingly, the Islamic lunar calendar does not add this month.  There is a specific religious prohibition against adding the month. Ramadan means "ninth month," and it is 11 days earlier every year.

I wrote a fun show in the planetarium where I worked about the difference between lunar and solar calendars.
