    It was meant to counter Soviet propaganda and the allure of Social Democracy

    Rising standards of living among average Americans during the 1950s and 1960s were supposed to be proof that capitalism could become a benevolent system that creates mass prosperity.

    The collapse of the Soviet Union and other forms of revolutionary Marxism and the weakening of Social Democratic movements meant the pretense could be publicly abandoned, and the good old days of economic Darwinism returned
