  •  Even where there are strong zoning regulations, (0+ / 0-)

there are "grandfathered uses" that have been in place forever. Often, they are right next to downtowns, residential areas, apartment projects, etc.

Zoning being in place is not enough either.  Because every location with zoning still has these hazardous uses grandfathered into place.

    •  Well we should cut out the grandfather clause. (0+ / 0-)

Especially now that we have clear evidence of how hazardous it it.

If you are custodian of a bomb (and half a million pounds of nitrate qualify), and there is a hospital, nursing home, or school within the NFPA defined blast zone, you have two years to find a new home for it, or pay to relocate the schools and hospital.

Yes, you own the land, but you don't get to keep a weapon just anywhere, even if you have been doing so for years.

This planet needs a lot more kids who think taking a lawnmower apart is more fun than playing a videogame.

      •  so if you are a dealer in fertilizer or LPG (0+ / 0-)

or LNG fuels, or diesel or gasoline ... and the town has put a school within that NFPA radius without your having a say, you lose?

I have a feeling an awful lot of Americans are going to find that a very hard pill to swallow.
