  •  Fundamentalists honor science, oddly (2+ / 0-)

As in, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In the face of mounting evidence of science's strength, fundamentalists abandoned the traditional understanding that the Bible comprises stories about spiritual truths, and instead began to claim that it contains Actual Facts. Just like science.

Of course, to do that you have to build very strong mental walls to protect against cognitive dissonance, since you're trying to shove a square peg in a round hole. Fundamentalists either do that very well, in which case they're impervious to 'comebacks' about their unscientific beliefs, or they don't stay fundamentalist.

It's a lot simpler to use tools according to their strengths: science to answer the 'how' questions, and religion for the 'why'. And there are plenty of scientists doing that. For example, there's Dr. Eben Alexander, a Harvard neurosurgeon and researcher who came back from a near-death experience completely convinced of the existence of God; he wrote about it in his book Proof of Heaven. The experience didn't change his view on science  (though it did transform his belief about the origin of consciousness).

(rather than trying to talk other people into seeing things his way).  He had no problem with science nor the theory of evolution.

I can't understand why the fundies get so up in arms about evolution vs creationism.  We're here.  Period.  Live with it.
