    ... I don't think anyone would have had a problem with using one to blow Charles Whitman out of the top of the bell tower at the University of Texas before he could kill 17 people with a high-powered rifle. He was an American citizen, btw.

    That's the type of lethal applications that are being discussed for these things. As long as it's being applied in the same manner as, for example, a police marksman, I really don't see a problem with it.

    This is new technology that, by virtue of its convenience and affordability, creates a need for new guidelines to regulate their use. For example, their monitoring capabilities aren't much different from helicopters and airplanes, but the fact they can be deployed in far larger numbers and are much more unobtrusive creates a need for further safeguards and established limits on their use. But this whole business about using them to kill suspects at large on U.S. territory is seriously overblown.
