  •  "Liberal media"......my ass (19+ / 0-)

Right wing billionaires aren't happy with just buying our elections. They want their batcrap crazy Ayn Rand vison of America to be spouted as fact in newspapers across the country.

Koch Brothers Interested in Buying Newspapers Across the Country

The Koch brothers, billionaire funders of the Tea Party and libertarian all-stars, are reportedly interested in buying several newspapers across the country, including the The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, and The Orlando Sentinel. They might also be exploring the possibility of buying Hoy, the second-largest Spanish-language daily newspaper in the United States.

The interest in the newspapers is part of a three-pronged plan to convince Americans that a small government is the best kind. According to the New York Times, the Koch's presented this plan to a group of like-minded billionaires who wanted to influence Americans through grassroots campaigns, political action groups, and now, the media.

Seton Motley, a conservative activist in favor of small government, told the Times, "A running joke among conservatives as we watched the G.O.P. establishment spend $500 million on ineffectual TV ads is ‘Why don't you just buy NBC?' "

It would have made a great deal of sense for the conservatives to have had someone like the Koch Bros buy it in 2009. They could have divested everything but the broadcast and cable properties and completely changed NBC to another Fox. Now that it is part of Comcast, it isn't for sale.

It is interesting that the Koch Bros are eager to buy the Tribune Co's stable of newspapers. I understand that News Corp is also a bidder. In any event it looks like those properties are going into more conservative hands.

One good answer is "because NBC is satisfactory to Conservatives already". Why waste money on something General Electric molded into an adequate player in the propaganda mill, when it can buy something not yet properly processed.

        •  DocG - I don't think that was the reason (0+ / 0-)

I just think they hadn't come to the decision that they should use their collective wealth to buy media properties yet. In addition the entire NBC Universal purchase was a big number, $30 billion which was more than they could afford, or were willing to spend.

            •  chmood - given that NBC owns MSNBC (0+ / 0-)

I think the Koch's of the world would very much like to change the format and on air personnel and have a second Fox News. I don't think the wingers would agree at all with DocG that they had no interest because NBC was already conservative.

a copy of CNN, a milquetoast neutral no-waves de facto conservative, as is most of US politics.

It changed NOT because of any ideological change in its ownership, but because it didn't get ratings, couldn't sell airtime, and had to try a new schtick. And the schtick it hit upon was to become the alter-Fox, and gather up any viewers that Fox wasn't getting. That formula worked, and they've stuck with it. Had it NOT worked, MSNBC would have dropped it like a hot potato and gone on to something else.

I find it amusing to see all the big corporate-conspiracy theories about how progressive views are banned from the air.  The simple reality is that progressive views aren't on the air because we are a tiny minority even within our own party and nobody but us wants to watch or listen to us.  When we DO get on the air, we die quickly for lack of ratings. I find it doubly amusing that the rightwingnuts had the very same excuse back when THEY were a tiny minority that was ignored by THEIR own party--"the liberal media hates us boo hoo hoo".  THEY responded by organizing effectively and becoming a disciplined political power that captured a major party and dominated American politics for 40 years.  We, on the other hand, prefer to cry in our beers because the big evil media hates us boo hoo hoo. We should learn a lesson from the nutballs.

It may be comforting for us to believe that everyone loves us, everyone agrees with us, and the only reason we don't win like gangbusters is because of the big corporate conspiracy to keep us off the air---but the sad reality is that nobody CARES what we say, because progressives are nothing but a tiny ignored minority who don't HAVE any consistently-accepted message to put out. Even our own goddamn party ignores us, so why should the media pay us any attention?

And that is entirely our fault and no one else's. The whole "the conservative media hates us !!!" is just an excuse. An excuse that doesn't help us.
