    The obvious example is Edward R. Murrow. His show was popular, but was off the air within a year of his successful attack on McCarthyism because of the withdrawal of corporate sponsors nervous about a reporter who actually told the truth.
    Also, the news is supposed to be a public service. Broadcast TV stations are expected to provide news coverage in return for their use of the public broadcast spectrum. News coverage is not supposed to be a profit center. The conflation of news and entertainment is a most unfortunate contemporary development.
