  •  I know some of you here are almost (7+ / 0-)

as old as I am.  And I am completely astounded and depressed as to today's political climate.  What was that
George Michael tune, "God let us all out to play, and some of God's children crept out the back door."  Liberals are being squeezed out of existence because the next chapter will bring a lot of heartache to most of us.  This isn't about Democrats vs. Republicans, it's about who gets to live or die in the coming catastrophe(s).  This isn't even about $ or power, other than who is going to be protected.  Whether buying up and residing on the "safe" land or buying that ticket to Planet X, it's pretty safe to say we are the generation(s) of humans that witness that last tree being cut on Easter Island.  All that remains is who gets to suffer first and who gets to suffer the fastest.

    •  yes, we may be seeing the end stages of capitalism (5+ / 0-)

which is ultimately a game of musical chairs in an environment with finite resources.  we will probably either see a revolution and redistribution or we will see a die-off or a little of both.  i have no faith in the innate human kindness of those that have accumulated great wealth and control of the resources.

    •  Definitely a train wreck in slow motion (4+ / 0-)

is underway. And the idiots in charge are walking the aisles pick pocketing wallets not even realizing there is a fiery crash ahead.

Obama Style Justice: Make 99% of Bush Tax Cuts Permanent. Then cut Senior's Social Security to pay for it. Hey Grandma, F#@K YOU!

being held back behind a big dam though (I realize, that we don't put dams in the sea but bear with me :) and lately I've been looking back to the early and mid 70s, late 80s and early 90s, and I am not giving up hope.

In reading Jeremy Scahill's new book, the beginning of the book goes through some of that time period as it relates to various presidents' policies on assassination and covert programs.  We were in pretty good shape until 9/11 and Cheney blew it all out of the water, using Bush as a tool.  Scahill lays out how Cheney and Rumsfeld and their neocon allies had extremist views since the 70s and how they gained and lost power several times over the decades but never stopped plotting and preparing. Friedman said that true change requires a crisis, and they made sure they were ready for the time when that crisis hit, and when it did, they moved with lightning speed.  They dismantled decades, in some cases centuries worth of good policies in this country.

And the most astounding thing is that they are a relatively small number of people. Of course they made sure that anyone who threw in their hats with them became very wealthy, and exploited the evil that has always been there related to greed.

But I also look at the Church Committee, the Iran Contra investigation and indictments (though that investigation missed a lot of big things) and realize that those things can and I hope will happen again.

Nothing is permanent.  We never know what event will be the spark that sets of the sea change.
