  •  This is getting silly. It's not some odd (31+ / 0-)

"hunger" to "shoehorn" anything. You are the one who is trying to force us not to call the detonation of bombs at the marathon "terrorism."

I understand your insistence that not all the subcategories of the US legal definition for terrorism may have been positively met. That is useful to know, especially when discussing the crime itself and the trial.

referring to the improvised explosive devices that were used as IEDs, because hey what is this, Iraq?

If my office chair went down a bit lower, my jaw would hit my desk every time I read one of these anymore.

      •  There is this: Until BushCo's wars, civilians (0+ / 0-)

and the MSM didn't talk about "IEDs".  "Homemade bombs"..."Homemade explosives" is what they were called.

Technically, a liter of Mountain Dew with a Mentos building up inside is an IED.

Stephen Spielberg got a movie camera for his 10th birthday.  He talked his mother into putting a lot of tomato sauce and white noodles in a pressure cooker and letting it explode all over the kitchen ceiling & walls so he could film it. THAT was an IED.

I think the issue bothering some of us is not the technicalities of how an injurious contraption is assembled.  It is that the term, IED, has come into common public use with the Afghan and Iraq WWII and Viet Nam I believe the term used was "Booby trap".

It's the psychological association of "IEDs" vs "Homemade bombs" that makes the difference; in fact, they are the same thing.  To the lay person an IED is associated with From Over There!...a homemade bomb/explosive is something a criminal wacko five states over put together.
