he broke federal laws about how much of ammonium nitrate he could have on the property without proper supervision.  Accident?  Highly unlikely.  Avoiding DHS and other regulation?  The Board of directors and supervisors own this horrific accident.  Honestly, every one of their personal assets should be on the line, it was their decisions that created this.  People died on the platform with BP and the people who made the decisions are on trial for criminal charges.  How is this different?

He thought he was being responsible. He thought he was smarter than the government. He found out he was wrong.

This is different from BP because he knew these people, knew them personally. He will see victims and their families every day. He will contemplate what would have happened had school been in session. He is going to drive by an live with the wreckage of that for the rest of his life... which to be honest, I don't expect will be terribly long.

We will see what the investigation finds, and we will see how he conducts himself in the aftermath.

I don't give him a pass. But I'm also not under any illusion that he'll walk away scot-free, regardless of what the law does.

"It may be that the purpose of your life is to serve as a warning for others," says the demotivator poster. I think that's probably this guy's fate. I hope the tragedy can be turned to better regulatory safety for these kinds of operations and a better understanding among operators and owners of their importance.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!
