is that the media, as an industry, consistently gives most of its campaign contributions to democrats.  Year after year after year.

is a political perspective, without separating the entertainment segment you would be wrong.

political media is conservative/corporate. it's not even close. entertainment is different. and where the money goes is relative to the state it's happening in.

to republicans the media is liberal because team limbaugh and the rest of the RW media have been saying it for decades. part of it is merely to sell their own BS, engender distrust in anything liberal, and intimidate media to move it further right and limit its scope.

it is also natural for conservatives, who are more fearful than liberals, to try to avoid truth and complications that would threaten predictability and conformity. they can't handle the truth and when they see it conflicting with their dogma they have to reject it and deny it. and cons are practiced deniers - without denial many would go crazy. they need to censor and like to hide behind their 'political correctness' labeling. the 1%'s people managers use the cons' fears and capacity for denial to control them and that's why they own and need to control much of the media.

consistently, except for some of MSNBC, major news/political media routinely goes out of its way to give 50% of the seats at their debates to flat earthers and liars living in an alternate reality enabled by a massive and successful US-wide propaganda messaging designed in RW think tanks. the groundwork repetition of that alternate reality is done by their talk radio monopoly and it enables and manages an entire political party.

          If only we had a liberal political party to advance our goals . . . . . . . ya know, like we had back in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's . . . .

          •  i agree on that. i think much of it is a function (0+ / 0-)

of the left ignoring RW radio while it kicks liberal ass, attacks and intimidates politicians that might be a lot more rational and progressive, and generally decides what is and isn't 'acceptable' in the US - pushing the center and the media's perception of it to the right.

and indeed of the whole RW media machine.  Yes, it stirs the loonies up and gets their panties all atwitter.  But all it does is preach to the converted. Its effect on the non-converted is pretty much zero. It certainly has no more effect on the public dialogue than MSNBC does.

right says has to be prechewed on talk radio first to give it weight and 'credibility'. the alternate reality starts on the radio.

you're way off on that, like most of the left, especially the younger left who have grown up in it's effects, the music -loving left who'd never consider checking it out, and the majority of the left on the coast and big population centers which actually have choices.

there's no way to read it so it's out of sight and not part of the political evaluation. and that's why we waste time with no brainers like debt ceilings/sequestration, benghazi, why we don't have single payer, and why a political party like the GOP has any obstruction power at all.

they'd have nothing without talk radio, even while it turns the GOP into a dangerous treasonous joke.

a simple fact: the media, as an industry, consistently gives most of its campaign money to Dems, year after year after year.

What they put on the air is an entirely different matter. My own view is that they want to sell ad time, and put whatever they think we want to see on the air, and if that happens to be conservative mouthpieces (conservatives still dominate the political sectors in the US, whether we like that or not), then that's what they'll do.  If socialists and progressives got them better ratings, then they'd put THEM on the air, and not think twice about it.

We want to act as if the media are selling political opinions.  They're not. The political opinions are only there to get you to watch corn flake commercials. And if different political opnions get more people there to watch corn flake commercials, then that's what we'll see instead.

media as a reflection of market forces doesn't work unless you factor in the hidden political business of selling war to sell weapons, etc. or selling bullshit myths to tens of millions in order to deregulate and privative "we the people" and funnel tax money into their own pockets.

that's what RW media has been very good at the last 25 years especially, thanks to the left ignoring talk radio, in particular.

the 1% didn't make their trillions selling corn flakes and cars, they made them selling propaganda and undermining the feedback mechanisms necessary for a real representative democracy.

          •  that is indeed true. But to sell all those things (0+ / 0-)

in the media, they need VIEWERS.

Even the best propaganda doesn't work if nobody watches it.

So they give us what we want to see, in order to watch it.

And what Americans DON'T want to see, is progressive viewpoints.  Heck, even the DEMOCRATIC PARTY doesn't want to hear it.  (shrug)

the 1% does quite well monopolizing sectors of media, particularly talk radio.

it's impossible for me to believe 95% of americans who listen to talk radio prefer the wit and wisdom of RW radio. even in many heavy blue areas there are often no progressive talk but RW everywhere and overlapping and duplicated.

that's a well developed, subsidized, and protected monopoly used to exclude progressive talk, where the same product and maybe more, can be sold.

in most parts of the US there are no free alternatives for political talk while driving or working. and 15 - 25% of americans say they get their news from talk radio. a huge audience, especially when considering every political cycle the 'strategists' think in terms of a few percentage points here and there.

your point is more valid for TV which is why it is more important in the propaganda operation in it's ability to ignore important information and perspective and pretend lies are truth rather than actually selling them. which is why radio is so important in the propaganda operation.
