In some areas, this whole controversy strengthens NRA support, rather than weakens it.

For instance, there was a huge surge of gun sales when there was a rumor that automatic weapons might be banned.

      It just spurs more sales!

      Is that your argument?

Calling other DKos members "weenies" is a personal insult and therefore against site rules.

probably after '12 too, but I specifically remember after Obama was first elected a radio news report about a big spike in gun sales because so many gun nuts were convinced that Obama was comin' to git their guns.

So basically we can't pursue any sensible policies, or even dare to support remotely progressive candidates out of fear that the gun nuts will only become more paranoid.
For the NRA crowd, everything that ever happens is cause to buy more guns, so why should any of our actions be determined by what they might do?

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.   Along with the "backlash" there is a "groundswell", and activists have to deal with both.  It may still be possible to use some of that energy, but you still have to deal with your dissenters.   While your supporters are coming out of the woodwork, so are your dissenters.

which is why I don't buy your concern about increased NRA support.

"In some areas, this whole controversy strengthens NRA support, rather than weakens it. "

Just because more dissenters might come out of the woodwork, why should that sway myself or 80%+ of the country from supporting common sense regulations?

is planning to beat Lanza's score. We treat guns like video games. And the basement planners use them like guns.

guns are fun v. hey buddy, watch what you are doing -- which side are you on?
