  •  The Russians have killed hundreds of thousands (7+ / 0-)

of Chechens, just in the post-Communist era campaigns. The death toll under Stalin's forced diaspora was higher. (And Chechnya's painful history, with Russia & its other big bad neighbors, dates back centuries.) It is a tiny region, so a death toll of this magnitude is truly staggering.

This diary is not about comparing 'which empire is more evil,' but rather giving some context to the recent historical suffering of the Chechens. Which does include genocide. While the horrors of Iraq and Vietnam were indefensible, they do not meet the definition of genocide, which the diary--if you read it--clearly lays out.

I am always staggered by Americans' lack of basic historical knowledge, even when it comes to recent events. What is more amazing: the 'defiant ignorance' that happens when those who consider themselves well informed pontificate without knowing many (or all) of the facts.

One bizarre byproduct of the horrific events in Boston: among all the bad reporting, there have been a few excellent articles explaining the complex history of Chechnya, Dagestan, Kyrgyzstan and Russian/Soviet policy in those regions. Yours ranks at the top. Thank you.
