    I remember how dangerously violent and evil the Chechens were portrayed in the press here. Then a completely different type of story broke through about Chechen mothers.

    There was a movement of returning captured Russian soldiers controlled by Chechen mothers. They would allow these captured soldiers to be freed if their mothers would travel to Chechnya and promise the Chechen mothers that they would not allow their sons to return and fight. The promise was made mother to mother in a very personal way. I thought that was fantastic. I wish it had more coverage.

      the one thing I wanted to say.  It's not about taking sides.  Those mothers saw a reflection of themselves in people who were supposed to be their enemies.  People who keep making the case for having an enemy should look at themselves, not other people.

      There is no existence without doubt.
