  •  Deeply oversimplified (11+ / 0-)

And I don't know anyone who operates that way on FB or other social media.

The active users of this site will play the biggest role in determining what goes viral, because we're necessary to get it over that first hump -- the rec list.  Once something gets there, the additional likes become more possible.

Google plus is a good example of this. A user with a limited following can post the most incredible post or image and get zero to half a dozen pluses (likes) while a popular user can post crap and get thousands of pluses (likes). This goes way beyond being a function purely of the numbers. There seems to be a point at which followers default to taking the positive action.

Aside from this I still stick with the argument that those who invest time here and contribute should be the ones that the decision making is based on.

If as is implied, the social networking side is merely an amplifier of what happens here then why not ignore it as, in that case, it doesn't change anything.

    •  FB likes definitely influence other likes (4+ / 0-)

I agree with your main point but wouldn't be so quick to disregard the herd effect pointed out by stevej.  Seems that liking thing is the whole basis for why FB now is mostly a marketing vehicle for businesses.

Nuance is lost upon those who choose not to look.

Facebook gives me a "like" button.  They don't give me a "Sad", "Angry", "Bookmark to read more later", or "Your goals suck, but good for you for achieving something!" button.

So I "Like" many things that I don't "like".  And I "like" some things simply because I'm a fan of the fact that one of my friends cares.

    •  rec list not so determinative (15+ / 0-)

in every blogathon we have done here for past 3 or 4 years or so, most every diary made rec list. don't remember any DK campaigns on those issues. In fact, we just did blogathon to get one million public comments opposing the XL SEIS for the tar sands pipeline. (discussed in this comment in markos diary) and there was no campaign by DK management to join us or do your own campaign on this issue.

There are outstanding environmental diaries that hit rec list each week, yet i don't see any DK campaigns for them either.

What i see at your DK FB page are links to some diaries at DK, mostly by frontpagers, but some by diarists, but also not eco. I imagine having diaries linked at your FB page gets them linked into the actions decided by nonkossacks in this data process you use.

So, it seems that there are some inherent features and actions that kinda make sure that some issues are out of the loop for whatever DK management campaigns that you do.

And, then we are told, well, if our community does not support eco (as evidenced by this data that is stacked against eco and other issues), well, meh, the community has spoken. But it is not our community that has spoken so much, as the nonuser email list community.

but actual politics that isn't just 'the Republicans suck' even when the reasons they suck are now non-partisan and really do come down to policy, direction and agenda instead of what's trending socially and peoples likes with no connection to reality.  Pretty pathetic when data drives discourse and certainly not pragmatic unless you do not care about anything other then beating the other side. Lot's of my real life friends who are liberal Democrat's but not activists or political junkies lurk here, when I say I'm a Kossack they say why, your a liberal Democrat.  Maybe their right.

These are not far lefties they are middle class Dems who are totally disgusted with the current state of the people and the policies in power who are Democratic. Most probably do do FB but are not likely to 'like' posts about Texas, Wal Mart or freak show RW maniacs like Bachman.  Imparting information to those who are not political activists and are low information seems valuable. Flinging poo at Republican antics while the Dems pursue the same policy and agenda isn't activism it's bs. propaganda that also distracts from getting decent democratic governance.

How is this pragmatic? It's not. It's cart before the horse politics that is disconnected from any meaningful change in the 'intolerable status quo'. Freaking slimy and useless. It also doesn't work if it did we wouldn't be facing catfood commission austerity and endless wars and no rights civil or human. .

Sorry to rant in your general direction Agathena but I really disgusted with this level of political chicanery  that has nothing to do with anything but money, marketing false meme's, the  politics of could be worse and reinforcing the idiocracy of the lowest common demonstrator. This is not  'our community' anymore then OFA is 'for America'. Data unhinged from anything but likes and hits is not only useless politically it's freaking misleading. It's like push polling and so corrupt and manipulative with nothing to offer other then likes or the babble of noise. I got rid of my TV because I was sick of this shit now I find out that the same thing is what drives the content here.
