    American mass retailers and labels could exercise, regarding the behavior of their suppliers. Surely they could do better than they have been doing.

    Shouldn't the larger American companies have representatives, or buyers on site in Bangladesh to make sure that their suppliers are treating employees with at least a modicum of respect? Shouldn't American companies see this as part of their own responsibility?

    Or is it for them purely a matter of the bottom line, no matter how many workers get killed and maimed? Is worker safety solely the responsibility of the Bangladeshi authorities? I don't think it should be.
