and at one point the Chicago Transit Authority was strapped for operating funds and money to upgrade their increasingly ancient equipment. The strapping, also as I recall, was due to some downstate Republican bullshit.

The CTA operates several lines, most notably the North Line that provides the Rich Folks from Evanston and on up to Wilmette. Lots of bankers and lawyers and developers, etc., live up thataway. So the CTA management started running the really old, decrepit rail cars on that line, and there were service delays and interruptions and guys in wingtips getting wads of expectorated chewing gum stuck to their soles, kind of like a sequester slowdown.

The Rich Folks did not give a shit if service on the bus and rail lines that brought the Lower Orders to their work stations was cut or the prices raised. But lo and behold, once the Rich Folks started to see their accustomed, taken-for-granted Rights to Proper Service being affected, the phone lines to Springfield and the Mayor's office and every other source of clout really lit up, and pretty soon the money was found, from general revenue as I recall, to make all good for them once again.

Herein endeth the lesson. He who has ears, let him hear...
